Holding on to Our Future
Today commemorates the one-year anniversary of the release of the Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People’s Inquiry Report titled Holding on to Our Future: The Final Report of the Inquiry into the application of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle in the removal and placement of Aboriginal children and young people in South Australia.
The Final Report was the culmination of an almost 2-year Inquiry that privileges the voices, perspectives and lived experiences of the South Australian Aboriginal community. The Report is a powerful, truth-telling call to action for genuine transformation of the child protection system in South Australia.
Wakwakurna Kanyini is strongly committed to continuing to agitate for the implementation of Holding on to Our Future’s 32 recommendations, as they provide a clear roadmap to reducing the overrepresentation of Aboriginal children and young people in out-of-home care. The implementation of Holding on to Our Future’s recommendations serves as a mechanism for the State to reckon with the inequitable outcomes and significant harm caused by its own legislations, policies and practices.
Wakwakurna Kanyini is determined to progress reform that addresses the drivers of contact with the child protection system and prevents Aboriginal families’ interaction with statutory responses wherever possible.
